Hi Hi, I feel like every post I start out by apologizing for not posting. It's November, and typically I'd be posting every day as part of NaBloPoMo, but alas, my life is too crazy to focus enough on myself and my writing. It makes me sad, but I keep pushing on. I know eventually I'll get back to having some time for myself, for friends and for family, but for now it's been all about work, unpacking and Ray of Light.

Oh yeah, I moved. I moved on Oct 18th. It's been almost a month, and I'm still completely surrounded by boxes. My new roommate left a note on my bedroom door last night saying that she hoped I was okay because she hadn't seen me in over a week. She called me last Wednesday morning to make sure I was alive because I hadn't come home.

I hadn't been home because I stayed overnight in San Francisco for work. I was working late because of a large conference and big client party. Usually gigs like that are fun, but this one was ALL work. I'm still not sure how I survived last week.

Ray of Light did a fantastic and extremely successful production of The Who's Tommy. I am so overjoyed by how far this little company has come in the last nine years and I can not wait to see what's in store for us next. I know I'm only a small part of the company, and I put in what I can, but what I get out of it makes me so happy that it's pretty much always worth all the extra exhaustion that comes from volunteering for show after show.
Take a look at these great reviews: Here. Here. And here.  Plus we had a consistent 4 3/4 stars out of a maximum of 5 stars on www.goldstar.com given by the general public that came to see the show.

What else did you miss?  Oh, Halloween. I had THE BEST costume.  Well, maybe not THE best of all time, but it was sooo good.  Everyone had to do a double take - they didn't know it was me!

I was a cigarette girl.  Cute wig and hat, a corset and a box full of candy and other assorted goodies.  Me and my fav theatre family and a little Capt'n time; I don't think I can remember having a better Halloween.

Whoo hoo...Ahoy Capt'n!  ;-)  haha, I couldn't resist.

Photos of the entire night are on my flickr page.

Sigh...time for bed.  The Capt'n is insisting that I'm in bed by 9:30p every night this week so that I can get a good night's rest.  Eh, I'm only an hour late, plus he's stuck in the Gulf of Mexico for another 50 days.  :-p   So, pppffffttt.  Castle is on tonight! I can't miss it!!

Welcome to September's edition - check out Chad's blog for more twelvers.

It's an all college football 12 of 12 this month.  Go CAL Bears!

10:44am - Obligatory shot of Shelby.  She looks all emo because she knows I'm leaving. This is her watching me put my shoes on and get my purse together.

10:45am:  Making sure I have my tickets to the game.  UCB Bears vs East Washington Eagles.  Whoo!

12:32pm - Outside the student center.  The CAL drumline usually gathers first to perform for the crowds at the Bear's Lair.  I love how they line up their hats on the ground during their performance.

12:39pm - This is my friend Cory. It's his first CAL game.  That's my hat. The photo wasn't staged or anything.

12:40pm - I was just shooting whatever inside the campus pub while we waited for our hot dogs and fries, but I ended up kinda liking this shot.

1:57pm - Finally up at Memorial Stadium.

2:21pm - As a bandgeek, THIS is my most favorite part of going to the CAL games.  The band enters with so much energy and then you get the canon blast there in the middle and they quick step out into a "flying" wedge and the drum major runs out and leap-frogs over one of the band members at the front and then they start playing Big C.  It's soooo exciting!

2:24pm - The tubas are such hams.

2:34pm - Bears in the mist.

3:03pm - My season tickets some how landed me right, smack dab in the middle of a bunch of families with kids under 10.  The little girl next to us had the cutest little galoshes on.

5:36pm - Final score.  Cory said early on in the game, "These Eagles aren't welcome at Hotel California, are they?"  It's jokes like that one that make me keep Cory around.  Great rout. Can't wait to see our ranking next week!

5:39pm - Cory and me waiting for the stadium to clear...who am I kidding, I was waiting so I could watch the band's post-game show.

Is anyone else shocked that it's September?  Just wondering.

Ok mom, don't panic, I didn't join a group that's flashing innocent bystanders.  I took part in a really cool, "spur of the moment" performance in Union Square on August 16th (HEY, I'm blogging, don't complain that this is old news...if it's new to you, it's NEWS).  I say "Spur of the moment," because while the random people in Union Square that day had no clue we were coming, we (a group of very talented and diverse people either a part of Ray of Light Theatre or friends of or randomly through the grapevine heard of this) practiced the dance routine for hours.  But let me back up and explain some key points.

1) What the heck is a FlashMob??
A) Example A:  You can also click HERE if the video doesn't show up below.

It could also be something simple like this:  Example B

2) How the heck do you get to be a part of this really cool thing??

Well, sometimes you have to know the right people.  Theater audition sites, Craigslist, or just being friends with weirdos like him, her, him and of course him.  Usually calls are vaguely announced via facebook, myspace (is anyone still using that?) and text message blasts.

3)  Was it fun??

Doooooood, so ridiculously fun.  Totally worth giving up a whole Sunday for.  I spent all day with friends being silly and then performing in front of stunned and confused people.  It was a great rush.  Also, the rehearsal took place at the old SF Mint over on 5th and Mission.  We got full access to the whole building. We peeked in vaults, ran through the hallways and danced in the court yard for hours.  OK, so that last part was a little hard and not as much fun as the peeking and running (ok, that sounds odd, but you know what I mean).

4) What's the point of all this??
Besides getting to do something new and cool.  It was tri-fold.  1) Publicity for Ray of Light's newest production, TOMMY the Musical to be performed at the Victoria Theatre in SF through Oct and part of Nov.  Go to www.ROLTheatre.com for more info.  B) Promotion for Wolfgang's Vault.  and Tres) To coincide with the 40th anniversary of Woodstock celebration that was happening in Union Square on Aug 16th.

5)  Well, what did you perform? Can I see it???

Geez, don't you ever say, "please?"

HERE

Hope you enjoyed it - I sure did.

Yea! It's another edition of 12 of 12.  I totally look forward to this all month and I get really excited when the 12th falls on a weekend so you lovely people person can enjoy photos from outside my office.  Today was so jam packed that I think I have more photos to choose from for this edition of 12 of 12 than any other 12 of 12 I've ever done.

Sooooo, without further ado, (further or do?)...here we go...check out Chad's blog for more twelvers and the explanation behind this whole shabang.

10:01am:  The, "Oh shit, I just remembered it's 12 of 12" shot.  Waiting for my mom to pick me up to go to the Alameda County Fair.

11:31am:  I like the collections exhibit. However, some don't really seem super creative to me. Like this one - Sugar Packet collection.  None of them were very exotic or different - there's one from Denny's up front for goodness sakes.  Nothing from out of the Bay Area except for a sugar packet from the Ahwahnee Hotel at Yosemite.  I give this "First Place" collection a big WHATEV.

12:25pm:  I just thought this was a good capture.  This little girl was giggling up a storm every time her mom leaned her stroller car back like that.  I wanna ride around in a stroller car.  :-(  My mom said I was too big.

12:31pm:  Taking a breather at the livestock auction.  Poor little piggy.

12:40pm:  My mom talking to the goat.  They had a "connection."

12:44pm:  Three little piggies.

12:44pm:  I couldn't help but take a photo of the one pig's hoof totally grabbing the other pig's ass.  Well, it looked that way.

1:19pm:  Horse races. We didn't bet but my mom was pretty lucky at picking the winners.

4:42pm:  On my way into the City to see Jess one last time and help her pack up some of the last stuff.  Yes, I was driving and taking photos.  What? It was a camera, not my cell phone.  Totally still within the rules of the law.

5:41pm:  NoLa = New Orleans, LA.  Kitchen Shit. I told Jess that it was self explanatory labeling.

8:05pm:  Then the boys came home from a day spent at the Indian Casino. Lance (standing in the back) needed a Band-Aid (T) and brought out his new rainbow colored bandages.  We all took one and the posing began (this one is in Lance's bathroom).  This is the shot we all agreed we'd used if we ever formed a band. We just need a good band name.  The Gandages (mix of the word gay (because they're rainbow colored!) and the word bandages) is the only thing we thought of, but we're taking name suggestions.

9:40pm:  One last hug :-(  We got a lot done.  Jess, don't forget I'm you're only friend that helped you pack!!  I'm such a rockstar friend, I can't believe you'd ever want to leave me.  :-(  You're fired.  Again.  But not really. Cause I need a place to stay when I come to New Orleans.  So I re-hire you.

Hello old blog. How have you been?  I know it's been a while; I don't have any great excuses. Sometimes the words come and sometimes they don't.  I'm sorry I've been cheating on you with the likes of Facebook and Twitter.  I've also been wiling away the hours watching "So You Think You Can Dance," and spending a lot of quality time with some awesome friends.  It's summer and the warm weather is just begging me to be outside and do more and see more and go to more places until I absolutely crash into bed from utter exhaustion only to wake up a measly few hours later and do it all over again.  I've never wanted to be a coffee drinker so much before in my life.  Every morning is a bigger and bigger struggle to get up and even more difficult than that is staying awake at work while tackling some pretty tedious projects. But I push through and every day I leave the office excited to join some old friend or see a show or cheer at a game or maybe just have a beer and laugh and chat and share with the wonderful people in my life.

There's one thing about summer that never changes for me.  It never feels quite like summer to me unless I've been to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.  It's my chance to relive childhood memories over and over and over again.  Yeah, it's not as iconic as Disneyland, it doesn't have the fastest or newest rides like Six Flags or Great America, but it's special to me.  And even if all I get to do is ride the Giant Dipper and take a spin on the carousel, that's all that's really required for me to look around and finally acknowledge that regardless of how hot the weather was before, that NOW, it is finally summer.

Woody sightings!!! Too fun!

And just to show off an already fantastic day on the Boardwalk - a dolphin sighting.  How lucky am I?

Welcome to the tardy June edition of 12 of 12.  Last night was a very late night, so I didn't have the energy to post these when I got home.   Check out Chad's blog for other twelvers and why we do this.

12:52pm - Yeah, I kinda forgot it was 12 of 12. Didn't take any photos till halfway through the day.  This is my $20 ring from Target. I got it last February to go with a dress I was wearing to a wedding.  I get THE MOST compliments on that ring than any of my other jewelry.  Gotta love Target.

2:31pm:  My co-worker's desk.  I was looking for a paperclip and when I opened the drawer it was like being hit by a wonderful, fruity, childhood smell.  It was her Orbit gum - Maui melon mint. I totally stole a piece.  hehehehe

6:28pm:  Went to a BBQ in Walnut Creek where my friends Kelly and Troy were visiting for a wedding. They invited me and old roomies Lindsay and April for some BBQ and drinkin' fun.  I knew there were going to by oysters, i just didn't realize there would be THAT many oysters.

6:28pm: Troy trying to shuck the oyster.

6:36pm:  Troy is really good at prepping the oysters.  It took less than 10 minutes to go from the ice chest and into my tummy.  SLURP. YUM.  Love oysters.

7:13pm:  Maritime boys, Eric, Cap't Dave and Troy with Kelly.

7:14pm: I just realized that Kelly is in both of these photos. Photo Whore!  haha.  Me with Kel, April and Lin.

7:35pm:  How we roll: college cup with wine, PPR and a bottle of champagne.  There's always enough booze at a maritime boy party.

7:58pm:  April demonstrates how small the space is that these trees have to grown in under the low balcony.  Troy called them the "Trees of No Hope."

9:26pm:  April is corny.

10:20pm - This is the correct orientation.  Lindsay really is leaning out over me at that angle.

10:25p - Now things are getting saucy.

10:25pm - EXTRA PHOTO. I just love Kelly's reaction when she realizes we're messing with her ass.

Had such a great night with my old college friends, I hardly even mind the hangover.  :-)

At this point in the trip, I kind of stopped taking notes.  I have things written in my journal, but it's all notes about sites to see or places to eat in the areas we planned to be in that day.  Not a lot of stories or entries about the day or the fun or interesting things we did and saw.  But I have to say, even though I didn't write much, Florence was my absolute favorite place out of the six cities we saw during our two week trip and I will remember it forever.

From the art to the food to the shopping to the landscape...I could have spent a week soaking up Florence.  But I only had a little over a day.  Which means, I had NO TIME FOR SHOPPING.  At least, not the kind of shopping I was hoping for. But, oh well, so I saved some moola.

There were three main places we visited in Florence (at least that I'm remembering).  The first was the Galleria dell'Accademia where the statue of Michelangelo's David is on display.  First of all, I apologize to anyone that I told this story to and I refered to the museum as The Uffizi...completely different museum from the Galleria.  Oh well.  Again, with the remembering without proper notes - this is why I write everything down at work, otherwise I would have been fired ages ago for incompetence.

Second of all - HELLO! HUGE STATUE!!  I don't mean big, I mean GINORMOUS.  I was NOT expecting the David statue to be so overwhelmingly massive, and yet, completely perfect in every detail.  I wish I could have taken photos in the Galleria, but it was prohibited.  Boom and I walked right into the museum thinking we'd have to wait in line to get into the room where the David is on display, but as we were having that conversation we turned the first corner into the museum and, BAM, there it was.  I still can't believe how accessible this masterpiece was to see.  I icould have stood there all day. I wished I'd had a sketch book. I'm a CRUMMY artist, but looking at something so iconic and beautiful made me want to take something from that room home with me.

Next we went to the Pitti - a collection of museums housed in the massive residence of the Medici Family, who lived there in the 16th Century.  It really is a treasure-trove of art and artifacts, antiques and costumes. I particularly liked walking through what's called, the Royal Apartments; all the rooms are designed and decorated in the style of when the Medici Family lived there.  Hard to describe, and again, no photography was allowed, but this is the type of place that you want to take time exploring all the rooms and getting lost between the stairways and hallways and quarters.  Unfortunately, we only allowed ourselves two hours and due to the time we entered, the museum was closing and I was unable to view the Boboli Gardens.  Definitely putting that on my list for "next time."

What was interesting when we arrived, because of the cultural week and an Italian National Holiday being celebrated in Florence, we got to see a grand procession and production inside the Pitti Courtyard.

There were flag twirlers, drummers and knights that put on mock duals.  It was fantastic and so entertaining.

Boom and I fell in love with a particular knight.  We'll call him Lancelot.  Because I can make it up...it's my story.

Look, he's so cute and charming that Lancelot.

He was up against this dude. Weird, feather hat, looks like he's wearing a diaper, man.  He doesn't get a name.

Go Lance, Go!  Beat Diaper Man!

Oh, that's too bad.  We still think you're cute though!

After the museum, we took a stroll. Well, a long stroll. Ok, kinda a hike.  Up to Michelangelo Piazza.  This is where one of the two David replicas is.  They aren't the same in size or color as the original in the Galleria, but they are still beautiful to look at and I had fun playing with the sun's shadows.

This is the perfect place to be for a view of Florence, and it's especially beautiful at sunset.

Breathtaking.  Absolutely gorgeous.  Peaceful.  Awesome.  Just a big, fat WOW.

I'm so glad I got to see this view in my lifetime.  I think I seriously would have been missing something without ever having seen it.

P.S.  I FORGOT ABOUT THE DUOMO!  The Wha?

Oh yeah, that thing.  That was cool too.  Lots of stairs though...

After a long Day 3 of trekking through Rome's ruins, we got a good night's sleep and woke up bright and early to face our last day in Rome.  We were also moving hotels due to a tennis conference, so it was my official first backpacking day.

Boom and Erik woke up in different hotel rooms, got dressed without ever speaking or seeing each other and walked out into the hotel lobby to discover they were wearing the exact same outfit.  All day it looked like Stef and I were being accompanied by medics.  I love how this photo gives you the idea of not just how short Boom is but how tall Erik is.

Our first planned stop after checking into our new hotel was to take a walk through the Borghese Gardens to reach Galleria Borghese.  Along the way we stopped for a snack at one of the vendor carts in the park and we finally experienced the joy that is Paprika Pringles.  Don't let anyone tell you that these are the equivalent to the American BBQ Pringles, because THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.  Sadly, the Pringles Website said they have no plans to bring these delicious chips to America.  Phooey.

Borghese was beautiful inside and out.  So many pretty things to see...but you couldn't take photos inside, so I was left with just my memories and whatever I could photograph along the grounds.

OK, so not EVERYTHING was pretty.  I apologize, but I just had to.  He was begging me to take his photo.  How does one sit on a cool concrete step and not realize that his ass is hanging out?

After the Galleria we took a stroll through Rome and I had a great time taking photos of all the wonderfully colored buildings and residences.  I love how warm everything is and how quaint the windows and doors are.

I also tried to get a little artsy.  I think I'll frame and hang these in my entry way when I grow up and have my own place.

We followed Rick Steves' walking tour from the guidebook Boom and Erik had to see the Spanish Steps, then Trevi Fountain and then the Pantheon.

More ominous clouds as the storms closed in, but I think they actual made the pictures look better.

We did something a little fun with this photo.  Click on it for a larger view, and then try to find Boom, Stef and me in the shot.  Kind of our little version of "Where's Waldo?" Italy style.

Trevi Fountain was crazy with people, but it's understandable considering how magnificent it is to see.  Every little detail is just beautiful and we couldn't help but throw in a couple of coins and make some wishes.

This place was pretty dang cool.  It was once a pagen temple that is now a Catholic church. But the main draw about this site is the massive dome with its 18 foot perfect, open circle.  It lets in light and and rain and thus there are holes in the temple's floor for draining any water. Seems odd and yet really cool to me.  So what do they do when Sunday mass falls on a rainy day??  No one could tell me.

We decided to take a small break, have some gelato (oh yeah, be jealous of all the gelato I got to have on this trip) and then we were going to retrace all our steps from our walking tour during the day so we could see all the same sites again at night.  In theory, we were excited. In execution, we felt a little crazy.

I took some time around the piazza we got ice cream in to take in some of the sights for your viewing pleasure.

We had a lovely dinner at an outdoor cafe.  A carafe of wine, a little pasta, great panna cotta for dessert and a lot of laughing.

I gave Stef and Erik my Italian phrase book opened to the Nightlife and Getting to Know You sections. AKA - The dirty section. Not that we had any plans to use some of the phrases in those sections, but it was pretty funny to imagine ever having to use those lines.  I think Erik's expression says it all.

We were all ready for a good night's rest after dinner and walking back through all the sites, but there was a small snag.  Our new hotel location meant we had to take the metro to a train and we must have misread the timetables because we missed the last train and we really had no idea how far we needed to go and we didn't  want to wander around in the dark.  I could see a sign for a bar up the block from the metro and decided that we should just go in, order a beer and ask the bartender to call a taxi for us.  Believe me, this was the best idea we had the whole trip.

This was our bartender. I never got his name, but I say we call him Marcello.  Name that movie.

It was like the bartenders thought we were the royal family with the awesome service we received.  They brought us a huge platter of bar snacks (that we didn't order and we weren't charged for) and they kept the drinks coming (which of course, we were charged for).

We didn't know how to order shots in Italian, so we went with the colors we knew.  Pink shots came first and then we dared Marcello to make us a viola shot (purple).  Everyone in Italy wears purple.  We never figured out why, but almost every retail shop window had mannequin after mannequin shrouded in purple clothes.  Marcello was game for this little dare, but unfortunately he couldn't get the shot to turn purple...instead we got a verdi (green) shot.  Boom, a beer and a shot in, pointed at Marcello and shouted, "FAIL!" We all giggled at the joke, but he didn't understand what "fail" meant.  I had no idea what the Italian translation was, but figured out the translation for "to lose," which is Pertere.  Upon my shaky conjugation to "Pertato!" Marcello took a moment to think and then sadly said, "Si...YES, I LOSE!"

We gladly took the green shots and then some appropriately named BOOM-BOOM shots.  Then Marcello came out with a tray of new shots and said proudly, "Si, I no LOOOOOSE!"

Voila, Viola!

It ended up being an unexpected, perfect evening and closed our last night in Rome in such a memorable way.  I think it may have been my most favorite out of all of the experiences we had.

Florence is next!

30 May 2009 @ 09:19 pm

Ok, so when we last left off, my travelmates and I had roamed around the Colosseum at night after a long day of exploring the Vatican and getting our barrings in Rome.  Our third day in Europe was even longer than the second.  We started at the Colosseum and moved from there to the ruins, to the Forum, to San Giovanni to the Scala Santa and then dinner in Trastevere.  And of course, along the way, I took dozens and dozens of photos.

It was a great day for a little ruins exploring...sunny and warm and we'd all slept so well and were ready for the day.

Lucky for us, we happened to be in Italy during their national culture week, which meant, every museum, every church, every tourist site was free to the public.  Tours or audio guides were extra of course, but entrance was completely free.  SWEET.

There's no way to explain the Colosseum . It's huge.  The floor of the arena is, well, in complete ruins, but you can see how magnificent it must have been under the arena floor in that huge maze or watching the action from atop the second level.

What's really spectacular about the Colosseum is that it looks like as columns fell and the place started to corrode from time and an earthquake, that anything that fell stayed where it fell.  So, you're walking around this massive place and pieces of the walls and architecture are all around for you to touch, sit on, walk around and of course, take dozens of photos of.

We left il Colosseo for a trek through Palatine Hill to Capitoline Hill...it all kinda looks the same to me, but it was still really cool to wander through it all.

And then we hit the Forum.  Everything is so close together - it put it in perspective for me that we weren't just looking at pieces of old buildings, but we were looking at an actual town that people lived in and worked in.  From the Capital to Caesar's house to all the temples...whew, are YOU tired yet from all the walking??

Eric brought along his Iphone where he had downloaded some of Rick Steves' tours of Italy.  We sat around a listened at various sites to figure out what we were looking at - it was super helpful and didn't make us look like tourists AT ALL.

This is at Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano...I think.  Wherever it is, these big green doors don't open and they won't open until the new Catholic Jubilee celebration in 2025.  Those Catholics are serious about their doors.  Still, it didn't stop us from trying to open them (click on photos for a larger view).

While San Giovanni was gorgeous inside, the real reason we trekked to that part of Rome was to see the Santuario della Scala Santa, or the Palace of the Holy Steps.  Story has it that the steps here were originally in Pontius Pilate's villa in Jerusalem and that Jesus Christ climbed them.  It's a major attraction, but it's also really hard to find, so look for San Giovanni and then the steps are in the non-descript building across the street.  So people come to the steps to worship and pray.  You're allowed to kneel on the steps, but you can't stand on them or walk on them. So people climb UP 28 steps on their knees.  I passed up the steps and just walked up the adjacent stairway so I could see the top.

We sat outside for a little while to rest and reevaluate what we wanted to do and see and when we wanted to do it.  I don't remember how it came about in conversation, but Boom used a bad word. A bad one. One that seemed just a bit loud and really inappropriate for sitting in front of Scala Santa and all the worshipers.
Boom:  "Opps, I probably shouldn't swear here."
Me: "YEAH, don't swear in front of the JESUS STEPS!"
Boom: "Jesus Christ!"

Then I pulled out my journal and wrote that down word for word.  So don't tell me I got any part of that wrong, because I totally have it in writing!

We finished Day 3 with a small and rainy adventure through the small, new "IT" town in Italy called, Trastevere (we originally called it "Tra-sta-var-A," but the metro pronounces is "Tras-tev-er-A" with the enunciation on the TEV part...so much prettier than our American butchering of the word).  We wanted to see what all the buzz was about and have dinner.  We eventually wandered through a piazza and chose a really fantastic setting for our meal at Ristorante La Canonica.  We also had an awesome waiter named Ruben.

He liked us.

There's graffiti EVERYWHERE in Italy, but it's different than what you normally see in the United States.  The graffiti in Europe is soooo pretty.  It's all art.  And the picture of Erik on our way back to the hotel on the metro is not staged.  Someone (NOT US!) left an empty bottle of wine just chillin' on the train.  The Italians love their wine.

It was an awesome but super tiring day and Day 4 proved to be even longer and fuller...I'm working on that post now.  If you want to jump ahead and check out the photos - see my flickr page HERE.

Day two in Europe was all about The Vatican.  MY PEOPLE!!  We all know that I'm a good, little Catholic girl.  I am.  Seriously.  Stop laughing.
Boom and I took the hotel shuttle at 8am and needed to be at the Vatican to pick up our "General Audience" tickets to see the Pope before 10am from the Office of the Longest Name Eve Prefecture of the Pope.  The shuttle took more than an hour in Rome traffic to get into downtown.  We were trying not to freak out, especially when the shuttle passed the Vatican on the way to the Piazza Cavour and we knew we'd have to backtrack.

We finally made it to St. Peter's Basilica where the mass was being held outside and with the help of a lot of pointing and gesturing and saying "Dove Bronze Door??"  to the Vatican guards, we finally found the office and got our tickets.   By the way Pope Benedict, it's not very intimidating when your palace is guarded by men dressed like this:

I'm just trying to help ya out.

Anyway, we finally get some seats and realize we have about an hour to kill until the actual appearence of His Holiness.  We were amidst all these teenagers in orange caps that said ANSPI.  There were bunches of these groups spread out through the crowd and most had large ANSPI flags that they waved around.  Turns out ANSPI stands for the National Association of St. Paul of Italy.  From my Google search I can determine that it's an organization for Italian Catholic students. They encourage volunteering for your community among other things, but it's hard to tell since the site is in Italian.

Orange Hat right............ there ^.

At first the Italian students were intruiged by us; obviously the only Americans in their little section.  They asked where we were from and we said the United States and then they asked excitedly if we were from New York. We said no, San Francisco, and then they turned around and didn't really want anything to do with us after that.  Oh well.

Soon the Pope made his appearance on his little car (no pope-mobile shield on this one though).  He circled the crowd a couple of times and came right near our aisle twice where I was able to get some great shots.

First time around

Second time around.  Seriously, we could have spit on him.  Not that I would have. I'm not that great at spitting.  But someone more skilled at such a thing, like a world champion watermelon seed spitter, wouldn't have had any problems reaching the Vicar of Christ.

The Mass went on and on and on as each registered group in the crowd was announced and they each had a few seconds to cheer or shout out a greeting to the Pope in their native language.  Some were entertaining, some were interesting, most were just basic whooping and hollering and Boom and I grew tired of this pretty fast.  So we left.

Yes, I KNOW we went all the way to Rome to be a part of a mass led by the Pope.  But dude, we'd been there for a couple of hours and we were STARVING.  We could still hear some of the mass from outside the Basilica area where we found a vendor with great Pollo Panini and acqua fredda and Coca-Cola Lite.

Did you know that Diet Coke in other countries is called Coca-Cola Lite?  And did you know it's frickin the best tasting soda in the whole wide world???  How can I smuggle some into the East Bay?

Next we headed into the Vatican Museum to get our tickets and wait for our other friends, Eric and Stef to join us.  People watching ensued.  Beware, the next photo is really disturbing.

Yes, that woman is wearing neon green Crocs.  In the VATICAN.  The mecca of my people.  So disrespectful.

You'll have to enlarge this photo (click on it) to see what I'm talking about.  Interesting choice of colored tights, but what was most interesting was the tattoo she appears to have on her calf.  What is that??  I was so jet-lagged and out of it still at this point that at first I thought it was a design on the nylons.

Eventually we started our tour.

This was our tour guide.  She was British and feisty.  She would wave her little wand with the scarf on it and command us to, "Follow Mama!"  It was pretty entertaining.  She also refered to Michaelangelo simply as "Mike."  I really liked her.

So we saw a bunch of statues. Craned our necks to look at dozens of painted ceilings.  We viewed maps, tapestries and tiled floors.  I took picture after picture and I couldn't give you any information about any of it.  But they sure are pretty.

After the tour and the Sistine Chapel (you're not allowed to take photos inside the Chapel) we wandered over to the bell tower and climbed over 300 steps to get to the top and then checked out the inside of St. Peter's Basilica.  This is where I took some of my favorite photos.  The weather was nice, a little breezy, and there were ominous storm clouds as far as you could see in the sky, but the sun was setting and everything looked golden and magical.

Later in the evening before we headed back towards our hotel, we decided to take the metro over to the Coliseum to see it lit up at night.  We had plans to go to the Coliseum and see all the other ruins the next day, but we didn't want that first day in Rome to end just yet.

Next up - Day 3 - All the Ruins.

Europe posting will have to resume tomorrow. Choir practice ran over and I'm so tired that I'm pulling out a post i've had in my head the last couple days that won't require too much thinking on my part. Sorry!!  Back to the program schedule tomorrow, I promise!

Due to the horrible sickness I had last week, I really wasn't in the mood to celebrate my birthday last Thursday.  Luckily I've got good friends that force me to get out when I don't feel like it but they know I'll regret it if I don't.

I asked if we could go to the park and play Bocce, open some wine and enjoy the warm weather, but Snowflake said it would be too hot, so I suggested Pot o' Gold bowling at Earl Anthony's in Dublin.  It's great fun and while I never leave with more than a couple of dollars or so, sometimes one of us gets lucky and ends up with like $10.  Schweeeeet.

So we gathered all the usual suspects - Chris, Deb, Nicole, Kristin, Laura (and not pictured, Jason and Bob)

Don't you just love how shorts and bowling shoes go so fabulously together?  We're so stylish.

One of the best parts of the night was when they called random raffle ticket numbers and both Laura and Chris got to go up and bowl in front of everyone for a chance to win back their entry fee ($17).  But, you don't just bowl at Pot O Gold...you have to humiliate yourself.

Get ready....

Get set....

ROLLLLLL!

And Chris wins!!

Thanks guys for a really fun night.  Twenty-eight may have passed fairly quietly, but I have a feeling that this could be a really great year.

Day one almost doesn't count since it was mostly spent on a plane, but there are a couple of moments worth mentioning.  We had an almost seven hour layover in Frankfurt, Germany and we ventured out to have a beer and stretch our legs after the 11 hour flight from San Francisco.

How did we know where to go?  Well, that's a funny story. You see, I had the fortune of going out on a date with a very nice man that just so happened to have lived in Germany for a little over a year.  He was very eager to share his knowledge of the area around Frankfurt and he even went so far as to print out a Google Map of a small town called Hattersheim near the airport where he promised we could find beer and possibly a farmer's market.  He was even nice enough to write out how to say "Airport" (Flughafen) and "Please" (Bitte) so we could tell the taxi driver where to take us when we wanted to go back to the airport.  It was sort of an odd date from the beginning, so when he pulled out this map after dinner it kinda felt nice to know I was coming away with something from the evening.  As harsh as that sounds, he wasn't a bad date, it  was just awkward and he wasn't the guy for me.

So Boom and I wandered around a fairly empty German town for a couple of hours until a little cafe opened.  Most European towns don't come alive until late in the day, so being there before noon wasn't a great idea, but it's not like we had any say in when we landed.

So here's your first tip.  When ordering beer in Germany, do not ask for a small.  The waiter thought it was funny and he said, no, there are no small hefeweizens.

My second European tip comes from our first moments in our hotel room in Rome.

You see that slot thingy.  That's where you put your keycard in order to work the lights.  Pretty much every hotel we had required that you leave your keycard in the slot if you were in the room in order to power any lights and the air conditioner.  We did not know this.  It only took us a few seconds to figure out that if you put the keycard in that the lights would come on, but what we couldn't figure out was why if you took the keycard out the lights would turn off in about 20 seconds.  It never occurred to us to LEAVE THE KEYCARD IN THE SLOT.  We ended up calling the front desk to ask how to keep the lights on.  They thought we were pretty funny.
And an extra tip in reference to the keycard tip - if your best friend is running downstairs to do something in the lobby and leaving you in the room, you should remind her that she shouldn't take the keycard in the slot while you're in the bathroom but instead get the second keycard that's sitting on the desk.

Next stop...the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel.

I apologize for the lack of posting, there's been a lot going on getting ready for my trip to Europe with Boom and a couple of he friends. And there probably won't be a lot of posting over the next two weeks, mainly because Sprint has crappy international coverage options along with their lack of decent crackberries to choose from.
Augh!!!! We're finally going to Europe!! So excited, and anxious, and nervous...these are all basically the same emotion to me right now because all three whip through me so fast about every five minutes or so.
Just because I know some of you will ask and I won't be able to respond, our first stop is Rome, then Florence and then Venice. After that we'll take a short flight into Barcelona and then Madrid. I plan to take LOTS of pictures of old stuff and artsy stuff. We're going to vatican city, riding the gondolas, attending a flamenco show and somewhere along the way I'll try to relax and remember that this is a vacation, not a forced march. Egh, but who am I kidding, if it's there to be seen, I'm seeing it!

Back in a couple of weeks. Ciao!!

This is a picture of me with my wonderful friend Clair.

Here's a better, close-up shot.

So, I know we both have brown hair, and on occasion I wear my glasses, but as Clair puts it, she's taller than me and I have bigger boobs.  She also kindly doesn't mention, but I don't mind bringing up, that she's a very thin woman, like a size 4 (correct me if I'm wrong Clair) and I'm a very hippy (but HAPPY) size 12.  We DO NOT LOOK ALIKE.

Why do I bring this up?  Well, back in 2003/2004, I met and went out with this guy named David.  We met through the St. Dominic's Young Adult Group after mass one Sunday where I had sung in the choir and obviously caught his attention.  One of the other group members introduced him to me and after a few get-to-know-you-questions he asked me out on the spot for dinner the following weekend.  I think he was rather impressed with the fact that due to my summer internships at the Livermore Laboratory I had a pretty good understanding of what he did for a living (something very scientific that I probably shouldn't go into here...but I knew what the project was that he was a part of and he completely lit up when he realized he wouldn't have to take an hour to explain his job).  Anyway, so David and I went out,  and it was....awkward.  But, this was before I knew what to say to socially awkward boys and before I was a no-nonsense, not going to waste my time on someone that's not right for me, type of girl, so I went on not one but two more dates with him.  I couldn't help it, I was just out of college, a college where I didn't date anyone because it was a college that was 70% female and half of the male population was either gay or joining the seminary.

So each date was more painful than the last.  He kinda reminds me of the character "Crazy Eddie" that Adam Goldberg played so beautifully on Friends. His laugh was more of a snort, and it both annoyed and frightened me.  He would talk about things that he loved and declare them as, "Better than sex!" and I'd sit there and think, "Really, your pesto pasta is better than sex with you? Okaaaaay...."  Not that we were heading in that direction, but it was just another reason to steer clear of him.  He told me that he had only had one good friend in his life, but that he lived far away and they never saw each other.  He told me this on the second date and I had a fleeting thought that maybe this "friend" was weirded out by him too and chose to not visit on purpose.  Ladies, I eventually learned that fleeting thoughts like that one are also known as RED FLAGS.

Anyway, so being a nice girl, I told David that maybe we should just hang out as friends.  So the third "date" was more of a group thing.  It was the night of the Chinese New Year Parade in the City and I invited David to join my roomies and a couple of guy friends for the afternoon festivities and then dinner.  I forget (or blocked out...) some of the specific things David did and said that made every interaction with him awkward and painful, but by the end of dinner I wasn't even talking to him and one of the guys that was with us leaned over to me and whispered, "WHO brought this guy??" obviously unaware that it was me who had invited him and subjected everyone to his winning personality.

After dinner we decide to hit up a new club, and fortunately, David decided that he needed to head back to the east bay on BART, so he shared a cab with us back downtown.  During the drive David started chatting with the cabbie and asking him if he was from Russia, which he was.  David spent the whole 15 minute ride trying to persuade the cab driver to score him a particular type of Russian vodka the next time he went home and bring it back to David.  At the time, one of the other guys said something like, "um, it's illegal to do that." which now I'm not sure if that's true, but at the time I bought it and it made the whole experience even more awkward as the rest of us sat in silence and listened to David pester the poor cabbie about  vodka.  The cab driver tried to be nice at first and just sort of laugh off the request, but then David tried to discuss how much he would pay the driver to do this for him and he kept trying to persuade the cabbie to change his mind.  By the time we got to the club the cab driver was getting pretty angry with David and wanted all of us out.

My roomies and friends ran up to the club and I was stuck there with David who was still talking the poor cabbie's ear off.  I just wanted to get away from him, so I asked him if he knew where the BART station was from there.  He said no, and I pointed and said, "It's over there." pointing somewhere in the direction of the Civic Center (oh yeah, we were down near the Tenderloin, which isn't the best area to be wandering around if you don't know where you're going).  Then I left without another word.  I pointed and left David there in the middle of nowhere, as far as he knew at least, and then I rushed inside the club.  I vaguely remember him calling after me, but I didn't bother looking back.

I remember running into him about a year later while I was waiting for a bus and he asked if I was hungry and wanted to get a bite to eat.  I was with Karl by then and I didn't want to talk to David at all.  Not because I had a boyfriend, but because he WEIRDS ME OUT.  Luckily, for once, MUNI was on time and I was able to make a quick getaway on the bus.

I haven't seen this man since 2005.  BUT, he THINKS he's been seeing me regularly.  You see, he thinks Clair is me.  He goes up to her after mass and will say,"Hi Stephanie!"  She has been on camping trips and to parties where he's also been in attendance and he absolutely cannot figure out that we are two completely different people.  He came up to her at a party this weekend with his new girlfriend and gave her a big hug and told Clair, "It's so good to see you Stephanie."  Even as I type this I can't help but giggle.  He's such an odd duck.

Clair just realized that there's a party we're both planning to attend in the middle of May that David will probably be at.  We think this will be the PERFECT opportunity to go up to him at the same time and just confuse him even more.

Hey Clair, maybe we should plan to dress alike and I'll wear my glasses and make this even more fun!  hehehehe

So I totally forgot this weekend was Palm Sunday.  My dates seem to be all whacked out as I focus solely on April 20th when Boomie and I leave for our two week adventure in Europe.  So I had plans to spend the entire day at A's Fan Appreciation Day and then head into the City for a fundraiser show put on by some past ROLTers for breast cancer research called B.O.O.B.S.  It was a really fantastic day and I'm so exhausted I just don't have the energy to give the play by play, but I will tell you that around 1pm, my friend Keith turned to me as we watched the Oakland A's work out on the field and said, "Hey, isn't today Palm Sunday?" and as a good, non-swearing Catholic girl, I said, "Oh Crap!"  Oh well, no palms for me this year; instead I got a much needed day with friends and fun.

We really have the best kept field considering they play football here as well.

Nicole and me hanging out watching all the cute players warm up.  Forgive my blindingly bright arm.  It's been a long winter.

Mr. Giambi back in green!

Matt Holliday, Ryan Sweeney and Jason Giambi field interview.

Nicole trying to get Ryan's attention.  I told her to hold the shirt up higher.

Click on the photo to see it larger - Keith is the weirdo in the background between the reporter and the gentleman talking into the mic.  What a nerd!  haha

Now...onto B.O.O.B.S...

Otherwise known as Busty, Outrageous, Over-the-top, Brawds Singing!

Not only was there amazing, fantastic music by the talented trio of Soila, LeAnne and Jessica, but there was also a PSA portion of the show.

Using bigger than life boob costumes, PAs, Joey and Carol helped the audience members learn how to give a breast self-examination.  It's very important to do this standing up...

....as well as while lying down.

Look at how happy those healthy boobies are!  :-)

Great, great day...

I really believe that things happen for a reason.  Take this afternoon for example.  I ended up having to work a little bit of overtime today, which is slightly unusual due to the slower economy, and then I had to go a little bit out of my way to drop off a last-minute box to Fedex in 3Embarcadero.  I was about to cross from 2Embarc over Front Street when the light changed, so I switched directions and kept walking down Front towards Sacramento Street going past the new Wine Bar.  As I was walking I ran into some friends I hadn't seen in a couple months who were enjoying some wine outside.  I sat and chatted with them a bit but had to rush to go pick up my new glasses prescription and then catch the train to meet Laura for dinner.  I got to LensCrafters and even though they promise glasses within an hour and I had dropped mine off at noon, at 6pm they STILL weren't ready.  I made my frustration known and then said I'd see them in the morning.  I hate bad customer service.
I finally made it down to the BART platform and instead of burying myself in a book or my crackberry like normal I took a minute to look around and lo and behold, standing only a few feet away was an old friend of mine from my Karl days.  It was weird and yet, I was so excited to see her.  I feel like one of the hardest parts of our break up was the friend break ups.  Not that any one ever had to choose sides, but it was just natural that the friends that Karl brought into the relationship left with him and the friends that I brought into the relationship left with me.  But it wasn't like there were two worlds to our relationship, so in breaking up, all of a sudden I was missing a lot of awesome people from my life.

I had thought about emailing her many times.  We even ran into each other once a little more than a year ago, but at the time K and I were still in touch and I was positive that I'd be seeing her and our other friends again as if nothing had ever changed, but that never happened.  We exchanged info and I'm excited to say that we'll be going for drinks next week to catch up.  I think I really need this right now - I've been driving myself nuts lately about what to do about the non-closure that is my past with K, so I think talking with someone from that part of my life might help me figure out what I need to do.

What was interesting about how this afternoon played out was that if I hadn't been held up I probably would have grabbed an earlier train, and if I'd been late by another three minutes, then my friend would have been on her train by the time I got downstairs.  If I had been lost in my own world standing on the platform, we would have stood there next to each other for three minutes and then she would have gotten on the train without me even noticing.  Definitely...things happen for a reason.

So, I'm not the only one that is struggling with the insanity of online dating.  My cute, silly, awesome, former roomie Lindsay joined the speed dating site I tried about a year ago so she could go to a mixer with me and a couple other girls and in the process had to post a profile for herself.  From that, she received a message a couple days ago from a 40-year old in New York that is honestly, quite similar to about a dozen messages I've received in the past.  While it's funny enough to blog about, on the other hand, it's so damn depressing that we have to sort through these frogs for our princes.

This is, word for word, the message she received.  I did not doctor it to make it funnier.  All spelling and grammar mistakes are obviously not mine since you all know what a grammar snob I've turned into.

Loveguard sent you a message:
Hi,i you're really beautiful lady . How about I take you out to your favorite restaurant , then to a movie i realise am kinda just too far to do that right now but nevertheless we can get to work something out.
I'd like to get to know you better I realize that I'm probably not your type, but I thought I'd try anyway.
If you'd give me a chance, I'd show you that I'm the nicest guy you could ever want.
Hello, read my profile and let me know if you're interested....

Been a busy, busy day. Had a great time hanging out and shopping with old roomies Lindsay and April, then helped Clair out and took her grocery shopping since I had my car, and then I went over to Adriane's and had some much needed girl talk. I'm still at Adri's so I'm basically just blogging to get in my blog for today, but I'll have to take photos of all the stuff I got today and show off how I'm failing at Bossy's Poverty Party. :-p

Hope everyone also had an awesome Saturday!
