Ok mom, don't panic, I didn't join a group that's flashing innocent bystanders.  I took part in a really cool, "spur of the moment" performance in Union Square on August 16th (HEY, I'm blogging, don't complain that this is old news...if it's new to you, it's NEWS).  I say "Spur of the moment," because while the random people in Union Square that day had no clue we were coming, we (a group of very talented and diverse people either a part of Ray of Light Theatre or friends of or randomly through the grapevine heard of this) practiced the dance routine for hours.  But let me back up and explain some key points.

1) What the heck is a FlashMob??
A) Example A:  You can also click HERE if the video doesn't show up below.

It could also be something simple like this:  Example B

2) How the heck do you get to be a part of this really cool thing??

Well, sometimes you have to know the right people.  Theater audition sites, Craigslist, or just being friends with weirdos like him, her, him and of course him.  Usually calls are vaguely announced via facebook, myspace (is anyone still using that?) and text message blasts.

3)  Was it fun??

Doooooood, so ridiculously fun.  Totally worth giving up a whole Sunday for.  I spent all day with friends being silly and then performing in front of stunned and confused people.  It was a great rush.  Also, the rehearsal took place at the old SF Mint over on 5th and Mission.  We got full access to the whole building. We peeked in vaults, ran through the hallways and danced in the court yard for hours.  OK, so that last part was a little hard and not as much fun as the peeking and running (ok, that sounds odd, but you know what I mean).

4) What's the point of all this??
Besides getting to do something new and cool.  It was tri-fold.  1) Publicity for Ray of Light's newest production, TOMMY the Musical to be performed at the Victoria Theatre in SF through Oct and part of Nov.  Go to www.ROLTheatre.com for more info.  B) Promotion for Wolfgang's Vault.  and Tres) To coincide with the 40th anniversary of Woodstock celebration that was happening in Union Square on Aug 16th.

5)  Well, what did you perform? Can I see it???

Geez, don't you ever say, "please?"

HERE

Hope you enjoyed it - I sure did.

Catching up on my blog reading. Unfortunately it is now midnight and I don't have the time nor the ability to keep my eyes open in order to write on my own blog.  Tomorrow...tomorrow...you can wait till tomorrow. It'll be good, I promise.

In the meantime...that damn bird is still kicking my ass in blog followers.   http://frontstreetattackbird.blogspot.com/

Have you heard the buzz around the Financial District?  Crowds are gathering throughout the day down on the corner of Front Street at California Street in San Francisco to witness the phenomenon that is "Swoops," a little black bird protecting a nest in the middle of a busy thoroughfare.

Most of the boys in my office are so enthralled by the sight of this tiny little bird swooping down to peck at the head of anyone that dares to pass by on this corner, that they've all started taking a lunch break so they can sit on the opposite side of the street and watch the bird as if they were watching the NBA playoffs.

Swoops is so popular, he has his own blog. And more followers in the last week than I've had in the almost six years I've been writing this blog.  Stupid bird.

Check out the YouTube links from people that have caught Swoops in action.  HI-larious.

March Nablopomo has come to an end.  It was fun getting back into the groove of writing every day and for some reason it wasn't as challenging as it was back in November.  I blogged easily for 30 days. Of course March has 31 days, but I blame that one slip up on the fact that I was so sick and doped up on cold medicine that I totally thought I had blogged, but I must have dreamed it because when I went to blog the following day, there was no post.  Too bad for you, I'm sure a doped up blog post would have been mighty entertaining.

I actually touched a little on this month's theme of "Giving (Up)."  There was the Lenten Promise - giving up swearing.  At this point I go through most days without uttering one bad word or even taking the Lord's name in vain (I sound so religious when I write that).  And with two weeks left until Easter, that gives me plenty of time to come up with more euphemisms.  Today I said, "Holy Cow!" in front of my boss and he gave me the, "Did you really just say that?" face.  Also in my arsenal are words like, Dagnabit, FUDGE!, Holy Cannoli, and Ah Geez (said with a midwestern accent, of course).  Giving up the swearing at the beginning was tough, but I think in the long run I'll start sounding like a demur lady.  Or at least I'll come across as a loud-mouth, sassy, dramatic, wannabe diva who doesn't swear.  I'll go for either I guess.

I also attempted to give up dating for awhile.  I did give up online dating for a good month or so, but as soon as I wrote this follow-up post it was like the dating Gods shined all their light upon me and I started getting asked out on date after date and my Match profile blew up after a month of no one even lazy winking at me.  I have a new date on Friday night with a guy that, at least over the phone, talks more than I do.  And tells longer stories than I do.  Either I'll really enjoy this, or I'll scream at him to shut up by the end of the first course.  And THEN I'll try to give up dating again.

Thanks for sticking with the randomness this month...I promise, I have lots more in me.  I hope you don't think I'm blogging too much about the dating life - unfortunately it's all consuming at times and this is the best place I have to vent my frustrations.  I'm hoping to have a new edition of the grammar nazi soon and as always, there are plenty of Shelby photos to share.

Shout Out! to Miss Sarah Nielson who so deserved a little prize and I was happy to oblige, and then she went and linked to me on her blog.  I heart her blog.  If you traveled over here from Sarah's page, Welcome! and I now Heart you as well...but only if you leave some comment love.

There are a variety of reasons why I've been feeling out of sorts.  Dating, work, preparing for my Europe trip, feeling unorganized and cluttered and feeling like I don't have time for everything I want and need to do.  Life is a balancing act; I think we can all relate to that.  On days that I realize I'm feeling a little off, sometimes I just need to take a few moments and get away from my normal routine.  Every week day I get up, get in my car, travel through the canyon to BART, work all day and then reverse my commute and end up at home to start it all over again the next day.  It can get tedious and sometimes I just feel like I need to break out.  But not in a big way.  Sometimes I just need a small change.  Today was one of those days.  So on the spur of the moment I took a different road home through a different canyon.  At this time of year, the East Bay hills are neon green and gorgeous.  THere's something about living here at this time of year and getting to take in the sights and colors that helps me breathe easier.  Going home through this different canyon only added about 10 minutes onto my commute, but I knew the sun would be streaming through the overgrown, old trees, the hills would be bright green and there would probably be horses and or cows roaming the fence lines.  I thought if I could find a safe place to pull over that I might be able to get out and take a few photos.  Taking photos is similar to how I feel about singing - it's a creative release. I love the results and the more photos I take, the better I get at it.  Or at least, i think I'm getting better at it.

Take a deep breath and look at these photos I took this afternoon - you might just be able to smell the grass and feel the warm sun.  Click on any of the photos to see a larger view.  I'll also post the full set and few other artsy, creative-releasing photos that I've taken lately on my flickr site:  www.flickr.com/photos/bellacantare

There's this cool orchid in my office lobby that was begging me to take it's photo.  So I took a dozen.  And then I messed with some of the SOOTC shots (Straight Out Of The Camera).  Let me know what you think.

This one just has some increased contrast

Basically the same photo, but minus the contrast and messing with the color saturation.

The colors are warmer on this one

And I used a bunch of brightening effects for this one.

I didn't do much with this one, I just liked the angle and the macro definition.

So - what did you like the best?  Here they are in a row to help you decide:

I think one day, when I'm all grown up and have a house of my own, I'll have a whole wall, or maybe two, dedicated to pictures from my macro collection.  Or maybe I'll just take all of these orchid photos and put them in medium-to-small frames and put them up in a bathroom.  I like the idea of a purple bathroom.

I woke up this morning with a scratchy throat, a horrible sinus headache and post nasal drip.  Lovely.  Exactly what do my sinuses do that is good for me? Because they always seem to make me miserable.

Sorry to cut this short, but I'm so doped up on medicine that isn't doing anything but making me loopy that I can't possible come up with anything decent to blog about.  I even tried to pick something out of my awesome "No One Care What You Had for Lunch" book, but darn that Maggie Mason for making all of those blog ideas require some thought.

ok...back to sleep.

My mind is blank for something witty to write about - so here are some blog links of websites I like to read that you might find more enjoyable today.

This is Brian's Website - he recently posted after moving away to Texas and falling off the face of the earth. I'm glad he's back online and he has just posted photos of his new nephew, Kolbe.

This is a new blog I just started reading.  It's called In the New and it's about a girl in NY that decided to do something new everyday for one year starting on her 30th birthday.  She's pretty quirky - I like it.

During my lunch "breaks" I like to read Waiterrant; a waiter's account of what it's like to serve the masses.  Although he recently quit his serving job at a Bistro in order to finish his novel, he's still coming up with some very well-written posts.

And my three staples - Dooce, Mighty Girl and Pioneer Woman.  I can't get through a day without them and I've started to become one of those crazed fans who gets all annoyed when they don't post or take forever (you know, longer than a day) for an update.  I've always been a soap opera addict - this is just as addicting.

I have many more that I read on a regular basis, but I don't want you to discover too many great blogs and stop reading MINE!  haha.  Happy Tuesday!

There's a new contest HERE where you sign up for a contest where you have to post a blog a day.  If you do then you could win some fabulous prizes (well, maybe not FABulous, but really, a prize is a prize).  Since I rely on my office computer to do these blogs it really depends on my schedule and who happens to be able to view my computer screen during the day that determines when or if I can post at all.  Those are hard circumstances to get around, so I don't think I can sign up for A Post A Day or NaBloPoMo as it's being referred to.

I learned about it from Maggie and may actually buy her book one day.

Gosh, I think this is my most-linked blog.

My friend Eli has a new tap instruction DVD out - it's on sale here:  http://www.tapdancemadeeasy.com . And if you're nice, I may just send you the link to the discounted dvd price (20% off!).

I've personally taken tap classes from
Eli and I loved every minute of it.  It takes some getting used to, even just learning to make a sound with your taps isn't as easy as it seems, but once I got past the first couple of classes I just couldn't get enough!  Eli's really easy to learn from and the tap dvd makes it easy to see the instructor's feet from different angles and the subtitle option gives the counts (I've never seen that with any other tap videos).

Even if you've never thought about tap before, why not?!?  It's great exercise (wait till you learn flaps and combos and timesteps, you'll be breaking into quite a sweat!) and a ton of fun.  It's also a great time waster now that I know some timesteps and paddles...I tap in the grocery store line, waiting for BART, and even during choir practice, as Clair will surely attest to.  :-)

He's coming out with an intermediate video to follow up on this beginning video - probably in about a year.  So get TAPPING, and maybe you'll be as good as me!  HAHA

Dustin Diamond (AKA - Screech from Saved by the Bell) is apparently losing his home (foreclosure) and is trying to raise enough money to save it by selling t-shirts with his mug on it.  He's now a stand-up comic, and not doing too well with that obviously, but he sought out the help of some lawyer to help keep his house when his property value when up, but according to Diamond's website, the guy screwed him even further and now it's being foreclosed.

See the article here and Diamond's website for his shirt sales and his side of the story here.

"The owner of Geno's Steaks, one of Philadelphia's best-known cheesesteak joints, stirred controversy by posting signs telling customers, "This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING `SPEAK ENGLISH.'" What do you think?"

I know my mom would agree with the restaurant owner in this article, she always says that people from foreign countries would come to live in the United States should learn to speak English.  But I've always had a problem with that ideal because the United States does not have an official language

What further upsets me is the live vote on the msn article that asks if people agree with the owner of Geno show that 66% of people think he's right and has the right to tell people what language they should use and another 22% don't see anything wrong with what he's doing.  I think that's very sad.

Furthermore, how many of us have traveled to foreign lands and not been able to speak the language?  How many of us did a year or semester abroad with school with little knowledge of a country's language, let alone their culture?  Why in my travels to Mexico (a Spanish speaking country) was it considered normal for all the vendors, shop owners and hotel workers to speak and understand English?  Why isn't the reverse situation (foreign speakers in the United States) tolerated as much?  Why shouldn't we all learn Spanish fluently in school as other countries teach English?

I made a quiz! It was very difficult, for some reason any time I hit the backspace key more than once to delete something the quiz would disappear and I'd have to start all over. Not a very nice quiz-making venue, but hey, it's done and now YOU have to take it! Enjoy. Make one for yourself :-)

TomKat has a baby girl named Suri. It makes me want to break out into Oklahoma songs.

Of course they're saying that Suri (pronounced sUe-ree? or SIR-ree? Whatever, I'm going with the latter) means Princess in Hebrew, or Red Rose in Persian. Suri Holmes Cruise, yes sirree.

This has always been one of my favorite numbers (the other being the number 2). WEIRD

Your Life Path Number is 11

Your purpose in life is to inspire others

Your amazing energy draws people to you, and you give them great insight in return.
You hold a great amount of power over others, without even trying.
You have the makings of an inventor, artist, religious leader, or prophet.

In love, you are sensitive and passionate. You connect with your partner on a very deep level.

You have great abilities, but you are often way too critical of yourself.
You don't fit in - and instead of celebrating your differences, you dwell on them.
You have high expectations of yourself. But sometimes you set them too high and don't achieve anything.
